3 reviews for Nextcloud Home/SME server – (4TB NVMe) + 32 GB RAM

I ordered this item. It was shipped within 1 day. DHL “lost” it. HanssonIT was all over it! They kept after DHL and it was found! I finally received it. There was an issue with the NVMe drive. Most likely DHL used the package as a football! I got the new NVMe drive and HanssonIT got me back online Saturday morning. Yes, Saturday! I want to thank the team at HanssonIT for staying on top of things and getting me up and going!

This review relates to [Order #17503] (August 30, 2021)

I have successfully setup my HanssonIT Nextcloud server and am completely off of Apple’s iCloud services. Here is a summary of my first impressions of the HanssonIT “Nextcloud Home/SME server – (4TB SDD) + 32 GB RAM.”

The Nextcloud setup workflow went smoothly. I selected only the default options and purposely didn’t try to be original (yet).

The setup process walked me through integrating with https://desec.io, which I didn’t even know was a thing. Neat! I may or may not end up using this DNS integration, but I will fiddle with it for now.

My entire experience with HanssonIT has so far been only positive:

    a. Ordering went smoothly.
    b. Order arrived quickly.
    c. Packaging was rugged and protective. No dents or dings.
    d. Unboxing had a delight-and-surprise factor with the clever stickers.
    e. Configuration was easy.
    f. Initial use is straightforward.

If you go this route, then you will need to accommodate these two issues that I wasn’t prepared for:

    * I needed to buy a power plug adapter for “North America” from my local Best Buy. I bought the “Insignia Travel Adapter & Converter” kit for $20 which included more than I needed.

    * I needed to buy a cheap HDMI monitor from my local Best Buy because my Apple 27″ Thunderbolt Display didn’t work.

I think setup and use is very approachable for most people. If my experience continues to be positive for the next month, then I will recommend this for my friends and family and probably give a few away as gifts.

    * If I give them away as gifts, then I will try to find a source for power plug adapters made for “North America” that doesn’t require me to buy an entire kit.

    * Depending on the personalities of who I gift these to, I might go through the initial setup so that all the recipient has to do is just plug it in and stick it in the closet.

It’s a nice feeling knowing that my digital life is private and under my control. For example, if the State wants my Nextcloud box then they can serve me a warrant themselves and not trouble a Cloud service provider like Apple. I love Apple’s products and services, and I want Apple to focus on creating more great products and services, and I do not want Apple to trouble themselves with the responsibilities of the State.

I like that the HanssonIT server is small, light, rugged and that I can easily carry it with one hand. It would be convenient and easy to grab it if I needed to make a dash for it (like maybe in case of a fire).

My motivation for starting and completing this project so quickly was due to this FAQ entry from August 5, 2021 in Apple’s “Expanded Protections for Children Frequently Asked Questions:”
    https://www.apple.com/child-safety/pdf/Expanded_Protections_for_Children_Frequently_Asked_Questions.pdf

Q: Does turning off iCloud Photos disable CSAM detection?
A: Yes. When iCloud Photos is deactivated, no images are processed. CSAM detection is applied only as part of the process for storing images in iCloud Photos.

Since I didn’t want to trouble Apple with processing my images, I needed to find an “iCloud replacement” quickly, and so far my on-premises Nextcloud setup using HanssonIT’s server is working well for me.

I think Apple is beginning to roll out their CSAM feature based on my read of Apple’s “New iCloud Terms and Conditions” dated September 20, 2021, a prompt that I started receiving on my devices last week. This new T&C is located here: https://www.apple.com/legal/internet-services/icloud/en/terms.html
